TUESDAY OCTOBER 14, 5pm (during the Intermediate class time)
a 30 min performance by the Northern Lights Quartet
A Currie and M Benjafield, violins; B Hart, viola; M McKay, cello
Listening/ watching LIVE performances is an important part of a child's music education
Please make every effort to attend with your MATT students!
ADVANCED CLASS starts at 4pm and ends at 5 pm. (15 min longer this year)Your required arrival time is 4:45- be in your seat ready to play by 4:55
Practice materials:
PRACTICE CHARTS, to be presented in class each Tuesday- should show the careful focus on all of the following items of study:
SCALE of G major. 1.Play your scale first half notes-check for excellent bow grip,
straight bows
weight of the arm on string/ high right arm & wrist
excellent tuning, full strong tone
2.For FIDDLE DANCE Prep., Play G scale in quick, even 16th notes:
eg on Ge&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a, Ae&a 2e&a,3e&a4e&a etc.
3. FIDDLE DANCE: Work in sections on perfect performance up to 4 bars before 2
4. MINUET: Check 3/4 time signature- Counting 1&2&3&- even eighth note counting
Work in sections up to 1st ending
5. POMP ands CIRCUMSTANCE PERFECT all hard sections- count carefully
INTERMEDIATE CLASS starts at 5:15 pm, ends at 6pm Your arrival time is 5 pm.
As soon as you arrive, get out your instrument and be ready to move into the circle as soon as the others are out.Bring instruments to the front for tuning as soon as you have set up your stand and music.

DURING TUNING TIME, PRACTICE CHARTS TO BE SHOWN TO MS. CURRIE
Practice materials:
1. How do we sit to play? Always on the very FRONT of the chair-feet flat on floor
2. With your right hand, make a "bunny" Practice wiggling your bunny's "nose". Ears up/ ears down.
Don't forget the bunny's chin! (thumb must be bent)
3. Practice placing your "bunny" fingers, slightly spread,onto a pencil. EVERY finger is bent!
4. Cellos, remember your right elbow is gently relaxed and not too far from your side.
5.Repeat this many times so that it becomes easy and natural.
6. NEW: HOLDING THE BOW CORRECTLY
with your LEFT hand, HOLD your bow stick near the tip in front of you ,HAIR down. Drop your right hand "bunny" onto the FROG of the bow-fingers are spread slightly, thumb bent.
CELLO GRIP : hand hangs down above bow, all fingers remain touching stick just above the first finger joint, thumb bent gently
VIOLIN/VIOLA GRIP: Angled position-pointy finger touches between 1st 2 joints, pinky on tip. Middle 2 fingers firmly on frog eye. Thumb tucked in front of frog inside bow
Next Tuesday we'll try out your beautiful bow positions with lots of bow games!
we'll hold our instruments correctly and strongly- no hands!
