1. NEXT WEEK TIME CHANGES  starting Nov 6  and on....
Beginners: arrival 4:15, class: 4:30 to 5 pm

Intermediates: arrival 5pm, class:5 :15 to 6 pm

Advanced  :arrival 6 pm, class: 6:15 to 7:15

2. ONE MORE TIME!! PARENT PHOTOGRAPHERS -CLASS PHOTOS NEEDED 
If you have a phone and can be in class, please take some happy shots of students, as they come in, as they tune up, as they set up, and as they play. ALWAYS ask for smiles!
Then send them to Ms Andrea-andrea@musicatthetowers.ca
  We'll post them on this Blog and use some for the year end power point!

a)THEORY SIGN UP for ALL Intermediates and Advanced  -see Yogita.
           Bring in your Theory workbook to Ms. Currie for level estimate.  
           NB: Book 1 test required before Alfred Theory  starts.

b) ENSEMBLES will start February

c) DECEMBER 7 MALL CONCERT: 7pm. arrive 6:15pm- for all students. . Please ensure that your child will be available to perform that evening.Dress:  MATT t-shirt and festive colourful pants/skirt/ accessories- no blue jeans please.

d) ADVANCED ENSEMBLE ROSE THEATRE PERFORMANCE: SAT Dec 1st. :
HAVE you got your shirt/blouse yet? 
Student apparel: Purple dress shirts/blouses with- Boys: black dress pants -Girls: appropriate colour or black skirt/pants, ALL please wear dress shoes.

2.                 0-1 STRING CYCLE. 
Play each string 4x with no finger down (OPEN -0) then 4X with 1st finger.
Go through all strings up and down, LISTENING for correct note

3. REVIEW: TWINKLE LINE 1:  "___" means long bow- all other notes, short bow

         Dynamics for 2nd time through : first line, pianosecond line ff -                                                                              fortissimo(as loud as possible) -full bows!

5. Review: HTPO- Happy Song- notes and rhythms. Careful counting

                          Follow bowings
                  N.B. CUT: play to bar 20 then skip to bar 40.

           1. Review: how to sit/stand correctly to play
                             how to adjust your bow grip (bunny hops onto the bow)
               BOW GAMES: Coin/eraser on palm -sing twinkle
                                        Windshield wiper, Monkey crawl, coin on hand
               
               Name your strings- top to bottom, bottom to top

            2.   Review: Playing notes on your strings
               STEPS: 1.with your best bow grip, lift the bow over the strings, 
                             2. touch middle of bow hair to one string,
                             3. let your arm weight "Drop down" onto string, hear a "crunch"
                             4. pull one short stroke down and then up again

TIPS for best sound:
 a) bow sits half way between bridge and fingerboard
 b) bow moves parallel to string,
 c) hair is flat on string -violin: lean wood away from nose, 
                                    - cello and bass lean stick upwards
  d) right elbow and shoulder are relaxed

  • Left hand finger nails must be very short 
  • fingers are " little hammers"- they do not open out, but stay rounded over the strings
  • finger tip presses firmly onto the tape with "cushy part of finger"
  • listen for clear tone (doh-ray)play DDDD EEEE- 0000-1111
  • repeat to make a beautiful sound
  • for good sound, pull the bow strongly -use half a bow length!

1. Fandango: - HOLDING THE TEMPO WITH EIGHTH NOTES
                     Can you download a metronome on your phone or computer? "Sound corset" is the one I use for android phone. Find a good slow tempo and play in time with it! We need to learn steady tempo to play FANDANGO well!
CELLOS: LEARN to play ALL of your MELODY bars -especially bars 29 to 42! without mistakes. learn one bar at a time, slowly, then speed up! ! 
                        
ALL: NEW WORK CAREFULLY TO LEARN NOTES especially bars 75 to end!!

TUESDAY CLASS TIME CHANGES START NOVEMBER

PARENT NOTES

1. TUESDAY CLASS TIME CHANGES, beginning November 6: 
Due to over-enrollment of 4:30 Thursday BEGINNER class, we need to move some Thursday students to Tuesday beginner class and offer the class at 4:30 instead of 4 pm.
This affects all Tuesday classes.
ALL Tuesday classes will have a time change as follows:
Beginners: arrival 4:15, class: 4:30 to 5 pm
Intermediates: arrival 5pm, class:5 :15 to 6 pm
Advanced  :arrival 6 pm, class: 6:15 to 7:15

Our goal at MATT is to guide your child into successful music training and the resulting sense of pride and achievement. We ask the lowest possible fees for this education, which provides not only musical education but also many proven side benefits for a successful future:
co-operation skills, self discipline, increased focus, respect for others. 

 Here are some important Parent tips for success in the program:

1) Check the weekly BLOG by Thursday evening to keep informed about MATT's activities and to review this week's homework. (Google Music at the Towers-go to BLOGspot)

2) Set up a practice routine of at least five (start with four for Beginners) parent-supervised sessions of 20 to 30 min 

   3) Record homework on the practice chart provided and bring the chart to every class.

4) Ensure that you attend all Tuesday classes and give advance notice for absence. Leave message for Yogita- 905 497 2220
4.) Drop in on the Private lesson occasionally, to see how the teacher approaches the learning.
5) Be sure to follow the Absence Guideline for missed Private lessons.

  • Start on your lowest string   (thickest) .
  •  Follow steps above for good sound. Pull 4 strokes close to the frog  
  •  Then change your elbow level to move to the next highest string. Pull 4 strokes  
  •  Repeat on next 2 strings-to arrive at the highest 
  •  Return and repeat moving back to lowest string

1. Mozart - Eine Kleine Nachtmusik:

c)CELLO BASS/VIOLA : Careful practice of bars 29, 37 and 38 Watch for altered notes eg # to natural, natural to flat etc. and 
d) VIOLINS: SLOW and careful practice on BAR 51- use only 4th finger for A and A#. 
                                            All notes are on D string. REPEAT 10 times a day!

f) Review: "spiccato bowing"- how to bounce the bow- use  for repeated eighth note sections
NEW: Special attention to legato smooth section from 11 to 17

a) Learn well from bar 1 to 14.
b) Write in NOTE NAMES  and fingerings on your lower strings
c) tune  your sharps (cellos-extensions) on lower strings
